The Kansas City Chiefs had a tough week, losing two games to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday and their division rival Oakland Raiders on Thursday evening. After starting the season 5-0, the Chiefs have fallen to 5-2 and have made things much more interesting in the AFC West division standings. The Chiefs could never get their footing against the Steelers, but looked to have a much better game plan on Thursday and seemed to have the Raiders well handled until they took to a more conservative approach in the fourth quarter and last on the final play of the game. The Chiefs will now have until next Monday to regroup and refocus, when they play the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football at Arrowhead on October 30th.
Outside of a poor showing against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Chiefs offense has played well this year. They are currently second in the league, averaging 392.4 total yards per game and are fifth in the league with 263.4 passing yards per game. Kareem Hunt leads the league with 717 rushing yards per game and already has over 1,000 yards from scrimmage thought the first seven games this season. Tyreek Hill’s production suffered the past few weeks, but went for over 100 yards through the air and a touchdown against the Raiders and looks to be healthy after being beat up the last couple of games. Travis Kelce has been targeted just 12 times the past two weeks with 70 reception yards, after totaling over 350 through the first five weeks of the season. Overall, the Chiefs offense has looked really good this season and has helped the team balance out the struggles on the defensive side of the ball.
The Chiefs have the fourth worst defense in the league this season, giving up nearly 400 yards per game The defense gave up over 200 yards to wide receiver Amari Cooper on Thursday and couldn’t keep the Raiders out of the end zone to preserve their victory at the end of the game. The Chiefs currently lead the league in penalties and penalty yards against them this season, and are doing themselves no favors. The Chiefs have adopted a “bend but don’t break” mentality on defense the past few season, giving up a lot of yards but going on lock down in the red zone, but the Chiefs have now struggled in that area as well in 2017.
The Chiefs are still one of the NFL’s best teams, but have been exposed a little bit by opposing teams the past couple of weeks. The team will get the weekend off as they prepare for the Denver Broncos in Week 8 and look to increase their lead in the division standings.
