Lewis Hamilton continues to get closer to his fourth World Championship after winning the United States Grand Prix. While he and Sebastian Vettel continued to fight during the first half of the race, Hamilton was able secure first place and hold on to claim his 62nd career win. His victory, along with Valtteri Bottas’s fifth place finish, gave Mercedes the Constructor Championship for the 2017 season.
Mercedes has now won the last four Constructor Championships, with the help of Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, and former driver Nico Rosberg. Bottas’s extended contract will greatly help them next season as Hamilton will continue to strive to be the best in Formula 1.
Despite Mercedes win, Ferrari ended up capitalizing on the day with two podium finishes. While they were able to prevent Hamilton from winning the Driver Championship at the Circuit of the Americas, Vettel would have to win the remaining 3 races and prevent Hamilton from scoring any points for the Ferrari driver to claim victory this season.
The big task for Ferrari next season, as well as the rest of Formula 1, will be focusing on how to prevent Mercedes from continuing to dominate the field. Along with Ferrari, Red Bull may have a chance at doing so as both of their drivers continue to show promise.
Max Verstappen had an amazing performance Sunday in Austin, starting in 17th place and initially finishing in third before suffering a 5 second penalty for going off the course while overtaking Kimi Raikkonen. Regardless of the setback, Verstappen continues to show that we will be a major force in future seasons for Red Bull.
Formula 1 will head to Mexico City next for the Mexican Grand Prix.
