The Los Angeles Rams have continued their hot streak to start the season, as they deeated the Arizona Cardinals 33-0 in London. At no point in yesterday’s game were the Rams out of control in terms of tempo of the game. They played their gameplan to perfection, and that started because of Jared Goff, whose career has been revitalized this year after an abysmal 2016 campaign.
Goff has become a completely different quarterback this year. He has shown command of the offense and has been less frantic in the pocket. The relaxed Goff has made him more efficient in the offensive system, and it has all been because of the young offensive guru Sean McVay.
Sean McVay has done two things for Goff. First, he has given Goff a nice balance in the offense. This allows Goff to get in a rhythm on offense. Usually, Todd Gurley is getting 20-25 carries, and that has stayed consistent all season. Gurley will be the main focal point of the offense usually, and Goff should know that going into every game. That gives Goff the understanding and relaxed nature to go into each game knowing that he is slowly improving while also getting the necessary experience. Gurley has the understanding of the offense, and McVay has used him to perfection in combination with Goff. This opens up the offense for Goff.
Opening up the offense for Goff has been key. This year, so far, Gurley has carried the majority of the load for the Rams offense. However, recently in these games, the Rams have let Goff start throwing the ball a little more. Three out of the past four games have been over 35 pass attempts for Goff, which are all season-highs. That shows the Rams are starting to have more faith in Goff as a quarterback, something the Rams never had last year. Goff has shown when the offense is opened up to him, he can perform.
Goff’s stats this year speak for themselves. He is currently averaging 13 yards a completion, while completing 60% of his passes. He also has nine touchdowns, with having a touchdown in every game this season. These stats show how much better he is than last year. In the same amount of games, Goff had five touchdowns and nine interceptions. This year, he only has four interceptions in as many games. These stats further prove why he is much better in this offense.
Another thing that shows he is better in this offense is his interception total. Last year, Goff looked lost and uncomfortable in the offense. Now, he understands what is going on. This year Goff has only four interceptions, with two coming in one game. So overall, Goff has been fairly consistent and has not turned the ball over. That is critical for the Rams offense. When they are not turning the ball over, they succeed on offense and usually win games. Goff must keep this up if the Rams want to have any shot at the playoffs.
Because of the resurrection of Jared Goff, the Rams are legitimate playoff contenders. Goff has performed well against quality defenses, and has made most all of the right calls. He has completed 60% of his passes, which is much better than what he had last year. Goff is comfortable in the offense, and owes this revival all to Sean McVay. McVay has brought this Rams offense to new heights, and it starts with Goff.
Goff can continue to play at a high level this year. He has shown he has that ability, but the key for him is to stay comfortable on offense. With him getting frantic in the pocket, it makes the entire offense fall apart. This was shown against the Seattle Seahawks. But, that game was an outlier compared to all the others. He has shown he can be a capable starter in the NFL. Without Jared Goff, the Rams would have no chance at the playoffs. So, as far-fetched as the playoffs seem, Jared Goff is the key for the Rams and making a playoff run.
