Well, after last week’s loss, any far-fetched hopes of the Jets making a playoff run appear to be thoroughly stomped into the ground. And I suppose that’s OK. The Jets weren’t supposed to be as good as they are this year and just having four wins right now is twice what I expected them to get during the whole season.
Still, there are some fanatics who still think that the Jets have a chance to make a playoff run in the weak AFC. Hold your horses and look at the rest of their schedule.
Week 12 vs Carolina Panthers
The NFC South is a powerhouse and the Jets just managed to look really bad against the worst team in that division. There is hope that, since the Jets have a bye week, they can win this. However, the Panthers are 7-3 and boasting a formidable defense along with a revilitzed Cam Newton led offense. This has the potential to be a nail biter, but not one the Jets are likely to win.
Week 13 vs Kansas City Chiefs
Many people might believe that this is going to be a blowout, but I don’t think so. The Jets have been very good at containing big plays this year with safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye so I think Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt should be held in relative check. Even so, the Chiefs are one of the best teams in the NFL and the Jets always seem to struggle against them anyway.
Week 14 @ Denver Broncos
The Jets should be motivated and hungry for a win coming off of two close games against good opponents. Meanwhile, the Broncos are having an unexpected and demoralizingly bad season. They also have the turnover king Brock Osweiler at quarterback. If Todd Bowles is the motivator that he’s been made out to be this season, the Jets will win this one. And I think he is.
Week 15 @ New Orleans Saints
Out of all the rest of the games on the schedule, this the one that the Jets might lose in an epic fashion. The Saints are always very good at home, even when they have bad seasons. This year they are fielding one of the better defenses in the league and an offense that seems extremely multi-dimensional. If the Jets can keep this one close, I’ll be impressed.
Week 16 vs LA Chargers
The Chargers have been slightly better than what many expected this season, especially on defense, where they have one of the better lines in the NFL. I still think that the Jets can beat them, especially because the Jets are at home in this game. Josh McCown should be able to deal with their relatively weak secondary, assuming he’s still the starter.
Week 17 @ New England Patriots
This is a toss up. The Patriots and Jets always seem to play each other hard and the last game probably could have gone either way. I’m going to have to go with the Patriots though, just because they usually come out on top in these situations.
So, 6-10 isn’t going to make it into the playoffs and it isn’t high enough to get you a top 5 or even maybe top 10 draft pick. Still it’s three times more wins than most people expected, which would seem to mean that this franchise is heading in the right direction. I think with a record like this, and assuming the Jets are in most of these games down the stretch, you gotta bring back Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan.
And things should get better. With a legitimate quarterback (which the Jets will certainly have in some form by the end of the offseason) and a few more premium position players, which shouldn’t be too hard to come by given the amount of cap space the Jets have, the Jets might be legitimate playoff contenders as early as next season.
