The New York Jets (4-6) face off against the surging Carolina Panthers (7-3) on Sunday at Metlife at 1 PM EST. You can catch the game on FOX.
The New York Jets have a chance (believe it or not) to put themselves in the position to be tied for a wildcard in the terrible AFC this year with a win on Sunday. It’s not crazy to believe that they have a chance either; not only are they coming off a bye, they are also at home. This might be a trap game for the Panthers, who currently hold a wildcard spot in the NFC.
Unfortunately, the Panthers are a really good team that boasts the toughest defense the Jets have seen thus far this year. After struggling mightily against a relatively weak Buccaneers D, how likely is it that the Jets will be able to put up points against the second ranked defense in the league?
On the other side of the ball, the Panthers boast a middling attack that I think the Jets should be able to handle defensively. This is especially true given the fact that Todd Bowles has been given an extra week to plan for Cam Newton and his offense. The Jets run defense has really come into its own lately, allowing less than 100 yards on the ground in each of the last two games. This should make Carolina one dimensional as long as they are able to contain a dynamic quarterback like Newton. If Todd Bowles is as good as some in the media are making him out to be, the Panthers should be held in check.
This game will probably play out similarly to the last one in that neither team will be able to score too many points. The difference should be that the Jets shouldn’t look sluggish like they did against the Bucs. If they aren’t ready to play, they will get blown out. That is on Bowles to prepare his players.
Ultimately, I don’t have faith that the Jets struggling offense will be able to take on a defense of this caliber. I think that it will be close, but ultimately the Panthers will come out on top. If the Jets do manage to win, it will be because of their offensive line having a good game, which is possible considering how up and down the unit has been this whole year. However, the likelihood of this happening is very low.
Final Score Prediction: 17-13 Panthers
Todd Bowles should be able to make his team come very close to victory, perhaps having the game come all the way down to a final drive. But ultimately, the talent isn’t there, especially on offense. Do you really trust Josh McCown to lead a comeback winning drive against an opponent like the Panthers?
I really don’t trust anyone in this game to get a decent amount of points other than Cam Newton. I think the Jets might have a tough time containing him. If I had to pick a Jets player, I’d go with Robby Anderson, who has scored in each of the last four games.
