It is no surprise the Chicago Bulls are struggling to win games right now. A lot of factors explain the current losing record. Significant player turnover in the summer, fierce competition in both conferences, and many players on the team with minimal playing experience. The question to ask is if the Bulls can make a comeback this season?
If the Bulls can make a comeback this season they will get validation the current crop of young players is the right mix of players to have as the core of the team. Also, everyone on the team can grow together and build a winning culture. An opportunity is around the corner for the Bulls to potentially gain momentum and win games down the line. However, the Bulls will need to improve in some areas beforehand.
The Bulls need a player who can score at will when the offense is not in optimal form. The three current top scorers for the Bulls consist of Justin Holiday, Lauri Markkanen, and Bobby Portis. These players do not have a track record of being able to carry the load on offense. The player with the most upside is Markkanen. He is a rookie and his skillset is still evolving. Holiday and Portis have not demonstrated an ability to score at will in their respective careers so far. It remains to be seen if either player can evolve their skillset. The upcoming games this season will provide some evidence.
The Bulls need at least one effective playmaker who can setup everyone else. Good passes make life a lot easier for everyone on the team. The three current top players in terms of assist include Jerian Grant, Kris Dunn, and Denzel Valentine. These players do not have a track record of being able to carry the load regarding playmaking. Time will tell if one of these players can evolve their skillset. Nowadays in the league the teams who are at the top have more than one playmaker. The Golden State Warriors come to mind.
The Bulls need a leader who can make sure everyone is on the same page. In general, a leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal. There is no player who comes to mind in the current roster. An elite coach can steer the ship in the right direction. An elite player can determine how fast the ship reaches the destination. The Bulls would benefit by having a player like Jimmy Butler, the top player from last season, who was the leader. He is no longer on the team. It will be interesting to see which player eventually fills in that role.
If the Bulls can meet all these needs this season they can potentially have a winning record. All the younger players can gain valuable experience and self-develop, which makes the Bulls a better team in the long run.
The more likely scenario is the Bulls fail to make a comeback this season. In this case, the Bulls will have a chance to get a draft pick early in the first round. This player can potentially improve the team immensely. The turnaround for the Bulls will be quicker. In the end, the process should pan out either way.
