A video game like finish put an end to the UFC Fight Night in Fresno, California. The main event featured UFC veteran Cub Swanson against the up and coming Brain Ortega. Both men are highly trained in mixed martial arts and call their home California. This was the match see who was the most talented featherweight contender to face Max Holloway. An excellent choke ended the fight in the second round and put him in front of the line to fight Holloway.
Brian Ortega stepped into the octagon as and undefeated prospect looking for that first win over a known name in the UFC. Cub Swanson had a desire to crush the prospect’s quick rise of the rankings and gain a rematch against, champion Max Holloway. It was Ortega first attempt at a five-round match in the UFC. A change many expected to be an advantage for Ortega most of his victory coming in the third round.
The first round went as expected for most viewers, standup fight between to fighters willing to trade blows. It was a filling out period for both men trying to figure out their opponent for the later rounds. It was clear Swanson was winning the round with an advantage in striking numbers going into the final seconds of the round. Ortega grabbed Swanson in the clinch and attempted a choke. Ortega pulled Swanson to the ground and tighten his grip on the neck. Swanson was running out of time before the choke finished him, luckily the bell rang saving him.
The second round of the fight had a faster pace than the first. Both men seemed to have figured out the range to throw effect strikes. Ortega again went back to clinch once Swanson was near the side of the octagon. Ortega again attempted the standing guillotine choke, this time using cage to jump and gain leverage. With arms wrapped around Swanson’s neck, Ortega jumped on pulling guarded locking his legs around Swanson’s body. Ortega let go and repositioned his arms to gain better leverage pulling Swanson to the ground. Swanson immediately began to tap as he had no way escaping the grasp of Ortega. Ortega got the victory and walked out of the cage still undefeated with bonuses of $100,000 for his performance.
Swanson is no joke when it comes to talented well balanced fighters. He has excellent standup game with a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Ortega solved the Swanson puzzle seemingly with ease with his choke going surprising fans and fighters alike. Such an impressive move comes from a dedication to the sport of jiu-jitsu for most of his life. Ortega trains at the Gracie Jiu-jitsu Academy to perfect the submission he uses in the octagon. Ortega hopes to continue that growth and his undefeated streak in more UFC victories. If Frankie Edgar continues to miss time because of injury current featherweight champion Max Holloway, Ortega should get a shot at the title. That is unless Conor McGregor decides to attempt to take his belt back. A matchup with another top featherweight could be with Yair Rodriguez would be exciting for UFC fans to see two unique fighting styles clash.
