The Winter Meetings are fully underway in Orlando, FL and the Pittsburgh Pirates have been intertwined in trade rumors all week.
After the New York Yankees made a blockbuster move to acquire Giancarlo Stanton, they now are looking at starting pitching options to bolster their rotation. Gerrit Cole seems to be the prized possession here. Cole was originally drafted out of high-school by the Yankees and GM Brian Cashman is looking to get him back.
The Pirates are using a strong poker face in this deal, acting as if they have no intentions of moving Cole this offseason. If the Yankees are able to throw some big prospect names out there like OF Clint Frazier or 3B Miguel Andujar, they may just get the Pirates attention after all.
In a sample size of 134 at-bats last year in the show the red-head posted a .231/.278/.715 slash line with four homers and seventeen driven in. The end of his season was muddled by injuries that inevitably kept him off the field.
Among teams interested in Frazier are the Oakland A’s, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers. The last thing Pittsburgh would do is get in bidding war for Frazier.
The Pirates do not necessarily need a fourth outfielder at the moment, but if they decide to move McCutchen they would have a fall-back option in Frazier. Miguel Andujar may be more intriguing to fill the void at third-base.
Josh Harrison is also attracting suitors. The Toronto Blue Jays were the first team to show interest in Harrison, but now the Milwaukee Brewers have also contacted the Pirates in attempt to get a deal going. Of the two, it is more likely they would ship him to Canada instead of their inner-division rival in the Brewers.
Harrison is versatile and is the ultimate utility man in today’s game. He can play both middle infield positions, third-base, and both corner outfield positions. He is clearly a coveted piece in the trade market this winter.
As for an Andrew McCutchen update, the San Francisco Giants who were said to be McCutchen’s top suitor after not being able to pull through on the Stanton deal are no longer in talks with Pittsburgh. Apparently, they now have pursued other options and are looking at adding Cincinnati Reds speedster Billy Hamilton.
The Pirates have held tight so far at the Winter Meetings, but teams are after them. What will happen in the next two days is really anyone’s guess but I see at least one of the two, Cole or Harrison, being moved before the week comes to an end.
