The New York Giants extend their losing streak to four games after their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles secured a first-round playoff bye in their victory. The final score at MetLife Stadium was 34-29.
In the second week since the firing of Ben McAdoo the Giants are 0-2. Against the Eagles, the team appeared more formidable than they did in the previous week’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
The score was close throughout the game without either team having an edge over the other. The Giants had the largest lead with 13 points early in the second quarter. The Eagles took control in the third, holding on until the end of regulation. New York was able to stay within range relying on their quarterback and receiving core.
Eli Manning had one of his best performances this year finishing with a season-high 434 yards on 57 attempts. Manning completed 37 of his passes with three touchdowns and one interception. In 13 appearances this season, he has thrown at least one interception in eight games.
The rushing attack proved to be ineffective once again. Four rushers combined for 23 carries with a gain of 75 yards. Orleans Darkwa was the only rusher to score, running for a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Their pedestrian running game in this matchup demonstrates how they are one of the worst in the NFL. Their ineffectiveness on the ground makes it tougher on the quarterback to make plays. The absence of two of the team’s top receivers decreases their chances of winning football games. Eli Manning would be in a better position if he had his entire receiving core healthy. The franchise will need to rebuild their offensive line in hopes to open up rushing lanes.
The future of the New York Giants seems a bit unclear. The litany of issues to address throughout the organization makes it more difficult in finding a starting point to rebuild the franchise. The most pressing matter is filling the vacancy of the head coach’s position. Steve Spagnuolo has stepped in as interim head coach. It is to be seen whether he will be promoted or if ownership will replace him with another candidate.
The season is two weeks away from conclusion with matchups against the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins still left on the schedule. It is possible that they will drop both games, making it likely that they will select second in the upcoming draft. Several teams are also in competition for that draft slot. If the Giants are to lose their next two games the pick will be theirs.
