Dewayne Dedmon was signed by the Atlanta Hawks last offseason to a two-year, $14 million contract, which includes a player option for the 2018-2019 season. So far, Dedmon has had his best season of his career with the Hawks in the 2017-2018 season. Starting 20 of the 23 games he has played for the Hawks, he has proven to be a solid center and defensive anchor. Currently, he is averaging 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this season.
The Hawks are clearly in rebuilding mode, despite a big win against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday. The Hawks will have one of the top picks in the 2018 NBA Draft, and they will try to draft a franchise player. The front office must be aware of how poorly the current roster is constructed, so they most likely want to trade veterans and players that are not in the long-term picture for young players and draft picks.
Dedmon is one veteran who is likely to be traded due to his solid performance this year. His trade value will likely never get any higher, as this is the first time in his career he has received consistent playing time. He could be traded to a team looking for a solid rotation player or even a starting center. Dedmon is also only 28 years old, so a team that acquires him could have him for many years to come.
The best part about Dedmon is that he keeps improving every year that he plays in the NBA. This year, Dedmon has started shooting from three-point range, and he is currently shooting 42% from beyond the arc. This will make it more difficult for the Hawks to let him go, but if the Hawks expect to draft a young big man this summer, they should look to unload Dedmon now.
One team that could use a center is the Cleveland Cavaliers. They have been starting Kevin Love at center and Tristan Thompson has been coming off the bench. However, both Love and Thompson are only elite rebounders and not solid defenders, which is why Cleveland is one of the worst defensive teams in the league. If the Cavaliers see the value in Dedmon, they could look to make a trade with the Hawks.
Another team that could be interested in Dedmon is the Detroit Pistons. They have Andre Drummond as their starting center, but they do not have much depth behind Drummond. Detroit also has the draft picks and other players that make a trade possible, unlike Cleveland, who does not have many assets that are appealing to a team like Atlanta, unless the Hawks somehow put together a package that intrigues Cleveland enough to include the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first-round pick.
There are other teams that have solid depth at center, but they could be interested in Dedmon, who has proven that he is a great role player to have on your team between his time this season with the Hawks and last season with the Spurs. Dedmon has been a bright spot for Atlanta in a season that has otherwise been a massive disappointment. However, if Atlanta wants to continue their rebuilding process, Dedmon is an asset the Hawks should look to trade before the deadline.
