UFC 220 will be the most important sporting event in the city of Boston this week!… Well besides that NFL playoff game going on. Regardless, this card looks to be one of the better ones. It has a couple big names and a ton of possibilities for fight of the night. Here’s how I think it will play out.
Fight Card Level: Buffalo Wild Wings
Overall Record: 36-23
Thomas Almeida vs. Rob Font
After losing to two tough Bantamweights (Jimmie Rivera and Cody Garbrandt), Almeida will look to get back on track in this one. No disrespect to Font, but this is one that Almeida should win and needs to win to continue moving forward with his UFC championship hopes.
Font lost his last fight to Pedro Munhoz by submission. However, he has had success in the UFC, compiling a record of four wins and only two losses in the promotion. Despite this, he will certainly be the underdog in this one.
Almeida has a ton of things he can do on the feet and should pick Font apart. For Font to win he will need to make this ugly and try to get Almeida uncomfortable. This will be a fun fight to watch.

Daniel Cormier vs. Volkan Oezdemir
This will be Cormier’s first fight since his no contest with Jon Jones. You would think he would be hungrier than ever to finish this fight in impressive fashion, but I don’t know. This feels a bit like a letdown fight for him.
Cormier put everything he had into his fight with Jones. He was 100% invested in its outcome and after everything that happened, this fight seems like big time drop. Now, Cormier is a professional and will be ready for this fight, but I don’t expect to see the best version of him.
Oezdemir is a dangerous man. If you aren’t careful he can knock you out at any point. Early in his UFC career, he caught a few people by surprise, but we now know he is legitimate.
I don’t expect this fight to be won before the final bell rings. These fighters have finishing capabilities, but I expect this to go to the ground a lot. Cormier will be careful with Oezdemir and will not want to get hit by any direct strikes. Cormier will push the pace on Oezdemir and eventually tire him out.

Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou
This is a great fight. The champion versus one of the most dangerous fighters the UFC has ever seen.
Miocic is a smart and savvy fighter. He has knock out power, but uses more than that to win his fights. Ngannou is a freak. He is the most feared fighter in the UFC because it only takes one shot and it’s lights out.
I see Miocic taking an extremely cautious approach to this fight. You will see him moving around a lot to give Ngannou a moving target as he peppers him with shots. Meanwhile, Ngannou will be trying to set Miocic up for that one big finishing strike.
If this fight goes to the ground I’d have to give Miocic the edge. If this fight goes into the later rounds I don’t see Ngannou having the gas tank. Ngannou will need to finish this within the first three rounds. I don’t think he does, but I also said that about his last fight with Alistair Overeem!
