So far this year’s Australian Open has been wildly entertaining. We’ve had our share of everything from the big three dominating to some bigtime upsets like the Alexander Zverev one two nights ago and some unseeded players like Kyle Edmund and Hyeon Chung making a name for themselves. Now that the week is coming to a close tonight I am going to make some predictions for what I see happening in week two.
I will start off by saying this if we don’t see at least one of Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal vs. Federer this tournament will have disappointed me. The second week has so much potential for the clashing of legends it would be a shame not to see it. That being said, I am not totally sold on Djokovic’s new service motion. I watched it totally break down in the first set against Gael Monfils in the second round, and if that happens against someone who can take advantage of it like Chung or Dominic Thiem than Djokovic will likely lose. That being said, I would expect him to make it through to Federer being the great champion he is. So I have Federer and Djokovic in that side’s semifinal.
As for the other side, Nadal will certainly make the semifinal at least. I think it also fairly certain that Grigor Dimitrov will be his opponent. When those two meet, it is always an exciting encounter, I would expect at least four sets, likely five. A part of me really wants to take Dimitrov because of how good he looked at the World Tour Finals and at this tournament so far, but I have to go with Nadal on this one. Until Dimitrov beats one of the big three in a slam I won’t be sold that it’s his time, so I’m sticking with the old guard on this.
As for the other side, Roger Federer is playing so well right now it is just too hard to pick against him. In the last year, he’s lost to one player ranked inside the top ten and that was David Goffin at the World Tour Finals. I predict a rematch of last year, Federer vs. Nadal. At least that’s what I’m hoping for. As for my champion, I’m sticking with Federer. As I said before, he’s looked too good recently to pick against him, and this is such a prime opportunity for him to cement his legacy. We’ll find out soon enough if there’s one thing that’s for sure it’s that we’re in store for an exciting week.
