All season long, the Washington Wizards have received valuable contributions from a very unlikely source. 26-year-old guard Tomas Satoransky has been an exciting revelation for the entire Wizards organization. Seeming to come out of nowhere, Satoransky has been a catalyst for the team and has filled in admirably throughout John Wall’s injury riddled season.
On Saturday, Satoransky had his outbreak game scoring 25 points, shooting 10-12 from the field. Undoubtedly the hero of the game, Satoransky is beginning to earn the respect of his coaches and teammates while endearing himself to Wizards fans everywhere. Since the beginning of the season, Tomas has made the most of his opportunities and solidified his status as a bright spot for the team moving forward.
Born in Prague, Satoransky is just the fourth Czech player to play in the NBA. On his way to the league, Satoransky honed his skills in various professional leagues all across Europe. He has also been a prominent member of the Czech national team and a professional basketball player since 2007. Even though he was drafted by the Wizards in 2012, he just recently joined the team last season.
The versatility of Satoransky’s game is something for all Wizards fans to be excited about. At 6’7, Satoransky has elite size and has not shown a single glaring weakness on the court. He is shooting 48.3 percent from deep, defending with passion, and moving the ball around effectively. Over this most recent stretch, Satoransky is also creating turnovers at a high clip. This month, he is averaging 1.8 steals per game. His high energy style and unselfish play are things that are beginning to make an impact on Wizards basketball.
With Satoransky’s contribution, the Wizards are doing much more than holding serve with John Wall out. Since Satoransky joined the starters, the team looks different. They have been on a 6-2 run without the presence of their all-star guard. The arguments about the team playing better without John Wall are continuously growing louder and louder. Visually, the team looks more in-sync, more interested in playing with each other, and they are playing much more competitively on a night to night basis.
If he continues on this path, Satoransky can establish himself as a regular contributor to a Wizards team that is in need of contribution. The unfolding of the Tomas Satoransky story reminds us all of why sports are so endearing. In one year, anyone can become someone, reminding us that we can too.
However, after an early exit with a head injury, whether or not he will be able to play in the team’s upcoming game is still questionable. Hopefully, the injury he sustained will not interrupt the fantastic and inspiring effort that he is putting on for all to see.
