One month from now millions across America will be filling out their NCAA Tournament brackets. At the moment Xavier Basketball is in a good position. To potentially get a no.1 seed in the tournament.
At the moment Chris Mack and the Xavier Musketeers can feel happy with the polls. Currently the Musketeers are ranked fourth in the AP Top 25. Xavier’s high standing was also reflected in another area. In the NCAA Tournament selection committee’s bracket preview released on Sunday. Xavier snagged the third no.1 seed in this preview.
Xavier isn’t the only local school in the top five. Cincinnati Basketball is currently ranked fifth. It marks the first time ever that Xavier and Cincinnati are ranked in the top five together. If one wants to find good college basketball in one city; Cincinnati is the place to be right now. With two practically tournament bound teams just a few miles from each other.
Across the river there’s the Northern Kentucky Norse. The third team in perhaps College sports best regional trio right now. They might also get the nod on Selection Sunday. Even though Northern Kentucky is not ranked. The Horizon League’s regular season and tournament title is potentially in their reach.
NKU’s tournament hopes depend on the Horizon League tournament. Sometimes that’s just how it goes in a mid-major conference. Meanwhile, Xavier and Cincinnati aren’t in jeopardy of losing a tournament bid. Their high-ranking in the polls offers a challenge to meet. Neither team, especially Xavier should get complacent.
After all, teams shouldn’t take much for granted in the Big East. Xavier can make a strong case that they deserve a one seed over the next few weeks. That case could also fall apart over the next three and half weeks. I think Xavier could get a no.1 seed if these two scenarios unfold. First, Xavier wins every game they have left. Second, they lose no more than twice between now and Selection Sunday.
This week in particular could boost Xavier’s chances. The Musketeers will face Seton Hall Basketball on Wednesday. Following it up with a matchup against Villanova Basketball. At the moment that game could be a potential preview of the Big East’s title game. Losing one or both of those games could hurt.
So Xavier fans can feel happy with the polls right now. However, once the selection show ends the polls and seeding wont mean much. It’s another reason why Xavier shouldn’t hit cruise control now. Fortunately the Musketeers seem unlikely to do so.
