Look heading into next Thursday or Friday, it is go time for the Spartans. Zero time to play anymore bad basketball.
I know what you’re thinking, well if Cassius and Miles and Nick don’t play their games the Spartans are going to have an early exit.
But, I’ve always seen Matt McQuaid as an unsung hero of this team and as someone who could get hot for MSU.
I’ve seen a lot of fans with a love hate relationship with McQuaid over his time at MSU, how at times he seems to get lost on the court and might not play the best defense from time to time.
Then there have been times that McQuaid has gone cold and you hear “but if he’s not hitting shots,
why is he in the game?!”
One thing you simply cannot deny is that if he is feeling it, feed him the ball. I want to take you back to the three game stretch of Indiana, Iowa and Purdue where the Spartans won by a combined nine points. McQuaid had a team high 12, eight and nine points respectfully.
The kid is a great shooter who we’ve seen glimpses of greatness of over the years and the Spartans will need his production if they are going to make a run deep into March.
McQuaid has not reached his full potential and March could be a time where we see those flashes of greatness deep into the games.
He’s more than likely not going to be a starter heading into next week, but will serve as a veteran spark plug off the bench. That’s the beautiful thing about this Michigan State Spartan team, there is a PLETHORA of veteran talent who have all played big minutes in the NCAA tournament and know what it takes.
For the Spartans to thrive, it will take some unsung heroes to out perform their expectations and to step up when the time is right.
Matt McQuaid has the ability to be this X factor and his ability to shoot should not be taken lightly by opposing teams.
