The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the hottest teams in the NFL, but one of their most prized talents is in danger of leaving via free agency. If the Jaguars want to stay competitive, they need to re-sign those talented core pieces while also looking to acquire more talent if they want to play in the Super Bowl next season.
One of their most talented players is Allen Robinson, who has played all four seasons of his NFL career with the Jaguars. Unfortunately, Robinson suffered a torn ACL in the first game last season, but he was a productive player for the Jaguars during his first three seasons in the NFL.
He is one of the best downfield threats in the NFL, and he is also one of the best at running his routes. With a confident Blake Bortles, Robinson has the potential to be one of the best receivers in the NFL. He already was one of the NFL’s best in 2015 when he was named to the Pro Bowl after accumulating 14 touchdowns and 1,400 receiving yards on 80 receptions.
The Jaguars decided not to franchise tag Robinson last week, but they have until March 14 to sign him to a contract extension before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Jaguars cannot afford to lose one of their talented young players to another team this offseason. Although the cost for Robinson will be quite high, he is worth that cost to the Jaguars and they need to re-sign him before Wednesday.
Jacksonville has the cap space to make the signing, and he would make roughly $15 million per year. If the Jaguars fail to sign him, then he will likely sign a contract for three or four years with another team as an unrestricted free agent.
The main reason the Jaguars need to sign Robinson is due to their lack of star talent among their wide receivers. The Jaguars have a lot of solid options that can play in the slot or go opposite of a star like Robinson, but Bortles needs a reliable first option in 2018.
Robinson has been that guy for Bortles in the past and can be in the future. The Jaguars could sign another receiver in free agency or draft one in the upcoming draft, but the wisest thing to do would be to re-sign Robinson, who has already proven himself in the NFL, knows Jacksonville’s system, and appears to be a budding star in the league.
