As of last Saturday, the Indianapolis Colts traded their No. 3 overall pick to the New York Jets in exchange for their No. 6 overall pick, and three additional second-round picks. This Colts team hit a home run with this trade for several reasons. One of these reasons is simple, the fact that Indy traded down to the sixth spot shows that they have all the confidence in the world that Andrew Luck is on track to coming back healthy. According to Colts’ general manager Chris Ballard, the organization plans on “easing” Luck back into the offseason training process come April. This is great news because this helps to show that things are still going in the right direction for Luck.
Ballard remained confident that Luck is continuing on the right path and that he will be healthy before the start of the 2018 season. Luck missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing right shoulder surgery, an issue that he had been dealing with since the 2015 season. Having him back under center is going to be game-changing for Indy, as it has been proven that this team can go far and is very successful with their franchise quarterback at the helm of the offense. The Colts now hold the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft, which means that they can still draft a premium player on either side of the ball, such as a Bradley Chubb, or a Quenton Nelson.
Think about this, the next time Andrew Luck steps on the field, he will have nine new young draft picks, thirty new total players, and a new coaching staff that is offensive-minded. Since coming into the league, Luck has been sacked the most, hit the most, hasn’t had a top-ranked defense, and has a treacherous offensive line. Yet, he continues to put up great numbers, and he does more with less, period. Needless to say, Chris Ballard is a genius because he knew exactly what to do when he became the Colts’ general manager.
He has single-handedly put this team in a place where it can be successful by dealing with Luck’s injury appropriately, making fantastic trades for valuable draft picks, signing young and talented free agents, and hiring offensive minded personnel for Luck to work with. The way that Ballard has handled this roster and his approach to success with the Colts in less than two years as their general manager is nothing short of phenomenal. I would not at all be surprised if the Colts are back in playoff contention this upcoming season. Chris Ballard has patience like no other general manager that I have seen, he knows how to be successful in the NFL, and he isn’t going to rush things.
The Colts are stacked with draft picks for the upcoming draft, thanks to the Jets. Indy now holds two additional picks in the second round, along with their original second round pick. This means that the team can now draft four quality day-one starters just within the first two rounds of the draft, which is almost unheard of! Things are going very well for the Colts franchise and their fans as Chris Ballard and new head coach Frank Reich look to get this organization back to its winning ways.
With the progression of Andrew Luck’s health only going up, the smart accumulation of additional draft picks, and a brand new coaching staff, I think that it is safe to say that Colts fans have every reason to be excited for this upcoming season. We’ll have to wait until the 2018 season to see how Luck and his new coaching staff preform. Nonetheless, it is without a doubt in my mind that Chris Ballard has officially made a name for himself as an incredibility intelligent and confident individual as he looks to make even more changes to this Colts roster that lacks at many skill positions during the rest of free agency and especially in the upcoming NFL draft!
