In 1997 the Seattle Mariners set the record for most team home runs with 264. The Yankees in 2017 had 241 home runs leading the MLB and this was without reigning National League MVP Giancarlo Stanton. The Yankees entered the 2018 season with the two 2017 MLB home run leaders in Stanton and Aaron Judge. The bats have been hot for the Yankees to this point, as they currently have the second-most home runs in the league with 57, and have four different players with at least 10 home runs. New York came into the season with Stanton, Judge, and Gary Sánchez expected to hit plenty of homers, but Didi Gregorius has been a welcomed surprise for the Bronx Bombers.
If all four can hit 40 home runs that would be the first occurrence in MLB history. This is the first season in the Yankees’ existence they have had four batters hit 10 home runs through 40 games. If Stanton, Judge, Sánchez, and Gregorius keep the pace they had through the first-quarter of the season it’s doable.
Kevin Kernan, a reporter for the New York Post stated, “The Yankees’ four sluggers own more home runs than the entire Mets (37) team. Six teams have two players with at least 10 homers, eight teams have one. The Yankees have four.”
These four Yankees’ players can do something special this season, but the whole team is in the running to beat the Mariners record set twenty-one years ago. Besides the new age Core Four players, they have gotten help from Tyler Austin (six), Miguel Andújar (three), and Gleyber Torres (three). New York has been on a tear to start the season having a league-leading record going 28-12. The Yankees haven’t shown all their bats can do, as they only have four games scoring over 10 runs this season. Once New York has multiple players hitting well in the same game, expect the Yankees to start slugging more home runs and getting extra runs.
Up to this point in the season the Yankees are on pace to hit 228 home runs, far from the Mariners’ record of 264. However, the Yankees aren’t hitting as well as they can. Having 57 home runs through 40 games is nothing to scoff about, yet the Yankees need more the remainder of the 2018 season to have a fighting chance. Players like Stanton and Judge need to show they are capable of smashing home runs like they did last season, with Stanton hitting 59 and Judge hitting 52 in the 2017 campaign. If the Yankees can get similar results from these two, while Sánchez and Gregorious get close to 40 home runs each the record is within arm’s reach.
