When writing about athletes and sports topics, writers rarely have the opportunity to discuss someone that they have a personal history with. This interview was one of those rare experiences where I had the opportunity to interview a long time friend and former high school teammate of mine, Cincinnati Bengals 2018 first round pick Billy Price. I played high school football alongside Billy from 2010-2012 at Austintown Fitch High School, just outside of Youngstown, Ohio. Billy has always been a great teammate, friend, and all around great guy who just loves to work hard.
Billy possesses a tireless work ethic and is willing to grind to become the best player that he can be. Believe me, I experienced it first hand during double practices on 90 degree summer days during our time together at Fitch High. Cincinnati fans should be happy to have a player and person like him on their roster.
Over the last week, I was able to have a conversation with Price and ask him some questions about his college decision, his time at Ohio State, and what he hopes to accomplish during his NFL career. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation.
What influenced you to attend the Ohio State University?
“One of my biggest influences for attending OSU was my grandfather. He fell in love with the coaching staff, he loved the academics and loved the campus. With those reasons, it was plenty for me to see why I belonged at OSU.”
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced prior to becoming a starter at Ohio State?
“One of the biggest challenges I faced was understanding the playbook as best as possible. During high school I played defense, and when I made the transition it was a huge change from defense to offense. I embraced it but learning the playbook was a long process for me.”
What was it like playing in and winning the first College Football Playoff?
“Playing college football was amazing. It was an opportunity that many never get and something that I never took for granted. Winning the national championship was surreal because I didn’t win a state championship [in high school]. The guys I played with during that game were one of the most talented teams I’ve ever played for.”
What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment at Ohio State?
“My biggest accomplishment was graduating and becoming a two time All American. My grades were a huge thing for me and becoming an All American at the greatest university was something I drastically wanted to accomplish.”
How did it feel to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft?
“Being drafted in the first round was an amazing thing to happen. I’ve worked so hard over the last five years to accomplish every goal possible, and when I received that call from Cincinnati it was a dream come true. I wanted to play close to home and represent my university, my family, and myself in the best way possible.”
What are your goals for your future in the NFL?
“My goals in the NFL are to compete for a starting position and become an anchor on the line for years to come. I need to stay healthy and become the best at my job.”
