Blake Bortles has had an interesting four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has been a top NFL quarterback at times and one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL some weeks.
Now, he enters this season as Jaguars’ starting quarterback after having to actually compete for the starting job last season against Chad Henne. This is his team in 2018, but he could crumble under the pressure of being the starting quarterback once again and have another bad season.
The team around him has gotten better this season, and that should help his chances of continuing to improve. Still, Bortles has been anything but consistent in his first four seasons.
The talent is certainly there, as he led the team to the AFC Championship Game and even used his athleticism running the ball to help the team. He was the third pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and the Jaguars have stuck with him ever since he joined the team.
Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Carson Wentz, Cam Newton, and Russell Wilson are all names that come to mind when you think of franchise quarterbacks. Though most of these quarterbacks have played many playoff games and Super Bowls, these quarterbacks are set apart by being consistent and putting up good numbers every season.
Bortles is not in that class of quarterbacks yet, but he has the potential to be with another good season and a strong performance in the playoffs.
Among NFL quarterbacks, he was 7th in the NFL in 1st downs with 192 in 2017. Also, he had the least number of interceptions in his career with only 13 last season.
Still, he was an average quarterback in nearly every category last year, but those numbers should increase with an improved wide receiver corps and a more experienced offensive line.
Bortles will improve again this season, but he will not put up spectacular numbers that are comparable to Brees or Wentz. He will be a franchise quarterback if the team is successful and makes the playoffs in 2018. If he leads them deep into the playoffs again, the Jaguars will not have to worry about drafting another quarterback for many years.
