The second annual Celebration of Life honoring former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler is this Sunday, July 22, in Grand Rapids and it promises to be bigger than last year’s inaugural event.
Atwater Brewery will be hosting this year’s event and will have its newest batch of Hey Diddle Diddle (a beer named after a Mike Sadler football play) on tap. Sadler’s mom, Karen, is expecting a big crowd and has worked with the city to close Monroe Street at Michigan. Michigan State is providing complimentary parking at the MSU Research Center, which is across from Atwater.
Karen Sadler highly recommends that attendees skip the line and purchase their tickets online, in advance – click here to do so – but tickets will also be available at the door.
Each $40.00 ticket includes:
- guaranteed admission at noon
- two free drinks (beer or soda)
- a Sadler wristband
- a souvenir pint glass
Children under the age of 12 are admitted for free but do not receive the drinks nor the souvenir pint glass.
Those in attendance will have the opportunity to visit with Michigan State’s mascot, Sparty, as well as the MSU Cheer and Dance teams and other special MSU guests (hint: autographs).
Members from the MSU Marching Band as well as the Desmond Jones Band, from West Michigan, will provide the music.
According to the website, attendees can enjoy a “classic Yesterdog meal, try to outsmart a card magician, bid on your favorite silent auction items and catch up with others to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Mike Sadler.”
This year, Dean Trailways is offering complimentary, round-trip transportation from Spartan Stadium, where attendees can leave their vehicle at no cost.
“Kellie Dean was very generous to donate two deluxe coaches to take people round-trip, free of charge, from Spartan Stadium Grand Rapids for this event,” said Karen Sadler. “We hope everyone will join us and have a lot of fun in celebrating the memory of Mike. That’s what he’d want.”
Those wishing to take advantage of the free ride to and from Grand Rapids are asked to reserve seats by emailing [email protected]
“Dean Trailways is happy to support the Michael Sadler Foundation’s effort to continue Michael’s legacy through programs that emphasize academic and athletic achievement,” said Kellie Dean, the President and CEO of Dean Transportation. “We hope that providing motor coach transportation to Grand Rapids on Sunday will help more people to attend and celebrate Michael’s life.”
