The curtain raiser for the 2018-2019 Premier League season has already been played and Manchester City has won the Community Shield by defeating Chelsea 2-0. Both goals came from record breaking forward, Sergio Aguero. While many see this game as just an announcement that the league will shortly begin within weeks, it is a great time for the teams that are playing the Community Shield final to earn silverware in their trophy cabinets.
Chelsea are currently in a state of transition, with new manager Maurizio Sarri taking charge after the sacking of Antonio Conte, and they are also facing some serious transfer speculations with first choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois being linked with a move to Real Madrid. This, however, didn’t stop Manchester City from taking it easy on Chelsea.
Within the first 15 minutes, Manchester City were already in control after Sergio Aguero scored the opening goal in the 13th minute of the match. The young academy player Phil Foden found himself wide open in the middle of the pitch, who guided himself through to the final third of the field to assist Aguero who shot hard and low to score his 200th goal for Manchester City.
Early on at the start of second half, Aguero had another clear chance to make it 2-0. Aguero was put through on goal and found himself one on one with Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero. After luring Caballero out of goal, Aguero was able to swerve to the right and away from the keeper’s pressure and was left with an open goal. Aguero fired but saw his chance got wide and missed the opportunity to score his 201st goal for the club. Optimistic as always, this error wouldn’t bring down Aguero’s hopes in scoring his second goal of the night.
Right at the 58th minute, John Stones cut off Chelsea from a play they were starting to build up. Stones was able to break freely and set up a great counter attacking play which lead to Bernardo Silva’s assisted pass to Aguero for his second goal of the game. Left open on the right side again, Aguero would not miss this time. Aguero made it 2-0 and scored his 201st goal for the club, making him the highest goal scorer to hit double century figures.
This achievement for Sergio Aguero is not one to take lightly. It has been something that was foreseen after becoming the clubs all time goalscorer last season. With Aguero’s current form and along with manager Pep Guardiola’s influence, Aguero can compete with Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah for the golden boot award. Aguero may also be a key instrument to Manchester City’s second successful title bid.
