The Western conference is the powerhouse conference in the NBA. The warriors have won the last two NBA finals, the Rockets offense can strike fear into any defense, and the Thunder led by Russell Westbrook have the ability to stretch out any defense. With all these talented teams its hard to get noticed, but a new team is ready to take the West by storm, the Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets back court is the most under rated in the NBA. They have the legit playmakers at the PG and SG position. Gary Harris and Will Barton are both young scorers who have the ability to go for 25 points on any given night. Barton can be a threat on the drive as he is known for his dunking ability, ask Thabo Sefolosha. Then when you move to the point guard position you have two-time All star Isaiah Thomas starting there. Before his hip injury in the 2016 playoffs Thomas was tearing up the league in the scoring column, averaging 28.9 points while placing 5th place in MVP voting. Thomas did not play as well in 2017 but is hungry and looking to bounce back in a big way. Then coming off the bench they will have Jamal Murray who in his second season averaged 16.7 points while dishing out 3 assists a game. This back court has the depth and talent to cause problems.
The front court is led by Nikola Jokic who is a problem down low. In 2017 he averaged 18.5 points while grabbing 10.7 rebounds a game. What makes Jokic special is for his size he possess a lot of skill where he can be a problem for most NBA centers. He is able to step outside the three point and knock down shots but also has moves down low that are very hard to guard. He is also a two-way player as he averaged 1 steal per game and a little under 1 block a game. Then starting at power forward they have four-time All star Paul Millsap, a defensive minded player who is not a liability on the offensive side of the ball. He has worked on extending his shooting range as he is trying to expand his game.
The Nuggets have talent and enough depth to become a problem for any team in the playoffs. Teams that are based off the fast break and iso basketball usually struggle come playoff time, look at the Portland Trail Blazers, but with the Nuggets its different. With the ability to score in the low post it forces defenses to respect the paint which will give shooters more space and time to get off shots. Adding Isaiah Thomas will add a veteran leader who can score anywhere and has playoff experience that could come in handy. NBA fans do not sleep on the Nuggets this year as they could be a dark horse in the Western conference.
