On September 5, 2018, Inter Miami announced their team name, colors and crest. The club is under the ownership of ex Manchester United superstar David Beckham, Simon Fuller, and Marcelo Claure and the grouped was formed in 2013. Last year in December, they added three new owners, Masayoshi Son and brothers Jose and Jorge Mas.
In 2012, MLS commissioner Don Garber, said that they were planning to increase the number of MLS teams to 24 by 2020 and then to 28 after that. They have already created teams in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Minnesota. Since the Miami Fusion team folded after the 2001 season, Garber and MLS officials were looking to create a new team in Miami. David Beckham help start them pursue there goal. When Beckham signed for the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007, Beckham and Galaxy officials negotiated an option to create an expansion team at a price of $25 million when he retired. Beckham retired from the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2013. After he retired, Beckham, his advisers and MLS officials started to discuss his option for the expansion team. On February 5th 2014, the league announced that Beckham exercised his option and plans to create the club started. Then on January 29th, 2018, MLS awarded the ownership group with an expansion team and from then on, they’ve been making plans for the team.
The team plans to be finished and playing in 2020 season and they will be opening there 2021 season with their new stadium. The stadium is planned to have 25,000 seats and is to be located in Freedom Park. Freedom Park is a proposed stadium complex that also has a park. The park is supposed to replace the city-owned Melreese Country Club. The complex is supposed to be about 131 acres of land, that will include 1,000,000 square feet of office, retail, and commercial space. The complex will also include a hotel, 23 acres of public soccer fields, the stadium, and the rest of the land will be a public park. All of this depends on the outcome of a public referendum that will be taking place in November.
Inter Miami hired Paul McDonough from Atlanta United to be their new sporting director. McDonough was the VP of soccer operations at Atlanta and before that, he was the Senior VP of soccer operations at Orlando City SC. At Orlando, he was responsible for first-team operations, developed and implemented the club’s scouting network and he managed player contract negotiations, transfer, and loan agreements. He helped Orlando City place seventh in the Eastern Conference in their first season. So his history goes to show that he has the ability to help Inter Miami achieve their goals. A big transfer rumor came out last week, that said Antoine Greizmann wants to play in the United States at the end of his career and would love to play for Inter Miami. “If Beckham wants me, I’ll play for him” Griezmann told L’Equipe.
