The Arizona Cardinals brought in Steve Wilks to replace Bruce Arians after five seasons. Wilks was the defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. Wilks inherited a team with many All-Pro caliber players ready to return to the Super Bowl contenders they were three years ago. They also drafted Josh Rosen, who has huge potential, and after week one I’d rather see him than Sam Bradford again. If week one is any indication of how the Cardinals will play, then you better get the alcohol ready, because it’s going to be a long season.
Sam Bradford is not Arizona’s guy
Arizona brought Bradford in on a two-year $40 million deal that many fans hated. I hate this and still do, because that money could have been used so much better. Bradford has a history of getting injured and just being an overrated player. He threw 34 passes in the game against Washington. Out of the 20 passes caught, they only gained 153 passing yards. Those numbers are absolutely awful and an embarrassment to the fans. I’d rather see Josh Rosen fail than see Bradford put up those numbers again. Bradford is not the right man for the Cardinals, and I hope the development of Rosen is quick, because Bradford looked terrible.
Arizona has to change the game plan on offense
Now I couldn’t tell you what the game plan even was for the Cardinals, because everything they did was wrong. Bradford looked scared to take a chance on anything. The Cardinals had a total of 213 yards of offense, and most of that was gained in garbage time. They went five full possessions having to punt the ball and then turned the ball over on the next possession. They finally had a 13 play drive that ended in a touchdown, but it was already too late. Bradford basically did not show up for the Cardinals and did the bare minimum at his position. If they want to win any football games, they need to make teams afraid of their throwing game. Washington dared Arizona to throw the ball, and Bradford couldn’t do it. David Johnson should not have been held to only 37 rushing yards. If this offense is going to succeed at all, they need to rethink their strategy with Bradford, and maybe, give Josh Rosen a chance to shine. I bet he’ll throw the ball down the field.
The defense did what they could
Arizona has been able to rely on their defense in the past, and 24 points allowed is not horrible. Unfortunately for the defense, the offense couldn’t produce. The defense was exhausted because the offense didn’t give them time to breath. The defense allowed three straight possessions with touchdowns and unfortunately for them they would have to come right back out because the offense would go three-and-out. Now the offensive struggles are a problem, but the defense still has to put a stop to the other team. They did get three sacks and recovered a fumble. They still gave up 429 total yards, allowing Washington to run all over them. If the defense can get some rest, they will be way better than what they showed this game.
Under Bruce Arians, the Cardinals had an overall record of 50-32-1. Arizona fans had high expectations for the Cardinals with Arians, and he delivered. The Cardinals were one of the toughest teams in the NFL, and now they look like a laughing-stock. Obviously this is week one, but where would we be without some overreacting.I miss being proud to cheer for the Cardinals, because for a while they were the only Arizona team that had success. The Cardinals will have their hands full against the Rams Sunday. I hope this is just week one overreacting, but I fear the Cardinals might be stuck in rebuild mode.
