FC Barcelona’s first game in the Champions League ,that took place yesterday, went very well. They beat PSV at the Camp Nou four to zero. The scoring didn’t begin until the 74th minute. Captain of Barcelona, Lionel Messi, opened the scoring by putting in a absolutely stunning free kick from 24 yards. The young and graceful winger, Ousmane Dembele, made it two nil, by losing two of PSV’s midfielders in one move, then curling the ball into the bottom right corner from outside of the box. Messi scored yet again, finishing a cheeky aerial pass from Barcelona midfielder, Ivan Rakitic. Immediately after Barcelona scored their third, their centerback, Samuel Umtiti, received a second yellow card for running into PSV winger, Chucky Lozano. By this time, Barcelona looked like they were done scoring, but they weren’t finished. The 10 Barcelona men were able to score a fourth to seal the deal, with Messi scoring his hat-trick goal by finishing a through ball that was flicked on by teammate Luiz Suarez. The other game in Group B was, Inter Milan vs Tottenham Spurs, with Inter winning the game 2-1, which means Barcelona leads the group by goal differential. Messi now has 104 goals, including eight hat-tricks, in the Champions League, which means that he has scored more hat-tricks then any other player in Champions League history.
Barcelona showed the world that they mean business when it comes to the Champions League, especially their captain, Lionel Messi. After a disappointing World Cup, scoring only once in Argentina’s four games, Messi needed to get back to his old goal scoring self. For Barcelona this season, Messi has scored seven goals in six games, the hat-trick against PSV and another four in La Liga.
Many people believe that his might be Barcelona’s year to win the Champions League. They’ve been knocked out at the quarter-final stage for the past three years, with Real Madrid winning the trophy those three years. Barcelona have not won the Champions League since 2015, and the players have spoken to each other about how important this years campaign really is. When Messi was given the captain’s band in August, he gave a speech at Camp Nou. He said that “we’ll do everything possible to bring the beautiful cup back to the Camp Nou”. He also talked about how he think’s Barcelona’s new signing’s (Malcom, Arturo Vidal, Clement Lenglet, Arthur) will help them succeed this year. Last season, Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa Del Ray, so with these new players, Barcelona have a good chance of winning Champions League.
Barcelona’s next match will be against Tottenham at Wembley, on October 3
