Indiana basketball fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time, the return of basketball. Indiana is a state filled with rich basketball history and devoted fans, so the offseason leaves a void in many people’s lives. You may be wondering; college basketball season does not start until November so how exactly is Indiana basketball back? Well, Hoosier Hysteria will take place Saturday, which will be the first time eager fans will see the new team on the court.
Hoosier Hysteria is the official tipoff for the upcoming season and each fan that attends the event receives schedule posters for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Each player will be introduced in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall for the 2018-19 season and both teams’ players will participate in a shooting contest. In addition, the men’s team will participate in the fan-favorite dunk contest, as well as a scrimmage. In past years, Victor Oladipo, Cody Zeller, and Troy Williams highlighted the dunk session with high soaring performances that caused fans to break out into instant cheers.
This event goes way beyond the fun and games and Head Coach, Archie Miller uses it as a time to let recruits experience the magic of Indiana. Among the many visitors that this event attracts are five-star prospects, Keion Brooks Jr. and Trayce Jackson-Davis. They are both highly anticipated recruits and Hoosier Hysteria is a great opportunity to show them what is special about being a member of Indiana Basketball. Up to this point in the new player’s experience, they have yet to take the court in front of the Crimson Guard, which is one of college basketball’s most passionate student-bodies. The event should validate to many players Indiana is a potential school to continue their athletic career.
Indiana basketball is always facing a difficult schedule, therefore if the players are going to be prepared for it, then getting early-season jitters out of the way is essential. The new players will likely attempt to prove to the fans as to why they were chosen to represent candy stripes under such a talent coach, Miller. The event also provides multiple opportunities for players to convey to the crowd their personality, with humorous dance moves and entertaining handshakes among players.
Following the event, both the men’s teams and the women’s will be available to sign autographs. Hoosier Hysteria is an annual event that has become the highlight of the program’s ever-growing fan base. If you are unable to attend, then be sure to check in after the event to see what you missed out on.
