F.C. Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he had multiple transfer offers from large clubs around Europe during last summers window. The clubs that seemed to have offered the Polish star contracts were Chelsea, Manchester United, and Real Madrid. The subsequent offers were denied by Lewandowski and Bayern Munich. This news comes after there was much speculation about Lewandowski’s growing unhappiness at the Bavarian giants after being beaten by Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
“When I realized, there was a strange atmosphere in the media and between the clubs, I decided to talk about it. I wanted to make a statement by saying: ‘If there are so many people who are not satisfied with me, I might as well leave’.
Lewandowski was the Bundesligas top goalscorer last season when he netted 29 times in 30 appearances, but failed to leave his mark in European competition only scoring on five occasions. The last of those goals coming in a 5-0 Round of 16 win against Turkish Club Besiktas. The semi-final in particular was frustrating for Lewandowski as he never crack Zidane’s defensive scheme.
Despite all of the struggles and criticism, Lewandowski admits he is happy in Munich and is only focused on producing.
“I can’t say I am disappointed. I am still at one of the best clubs in the world.”
“I will still fight for the biggest goals. The season is long and we can play at the highest level. Even though there are currently many things which we need to improve.”
So far this season Lewandowski has scored three goals in six appearances in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League. Bayern will need Lewandowski’s goal scoring to improve as they sit in sixth position in the Bundesliga table with 13 points, four behind rivals Borussia Dortmund at the top. Bayern are also second in Group E of the Champions League behind Ajax Amsterdam.
Lewandowski left Dortmund to join Bayern for free in the summer of 2014. Whether the Pole will leave this coming summer is yet to be seen, but for the time being the most important thing that Lewandowski can do is score goals. Bayern have dropped points in four straight matches, their last win coming on Sept 22 against Schalke 04.
Bayern’s next match will come in the Bundesliga against WFL Wolfsburg on Saturday Oct 20. Bayern’s next Champions league match is Tuesday Oct 23 when they travel to Athens, Greece to play AEK.
