The United States were dominated by Columbia yesterday at Raymond James Stadium, 4-2. Columbia had 63% possession to the U.S 37%, and the Columbian’s had 17 shots to the U.S’ 5. The U.S team put up a good fight against Columbia, but they were just more talented and experienced then the young Americans. The U.S didn’t have three of their key players due to injury, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams.
The game was intense from the beginning, but Columbia was able to find the back of the net through star attacking midfielder, James Rodriquez. He received the ball on the right side of the American’s box, and curled a beautiful shot into the far top right corner, the goal was stunning. The U.S were able to come back right after halftime, when a ball was crossed into the box and finished by Kellyn Acosta. Then in the 53 minute, the U.S found a second when the had a counterattacking opportunity. Tim Weah took on his defender and played a lovely through ball to Bobby Wood, where he finished his chance. After the American’s two goals, the rest of the game was all Columbia. Three minutes after their second, Carlos Bacca received a cross that he finished first time. Then in the 74 minute, Radamel Falcao finished a pass first time from the top of the box. Columbia sealed the deal 5 minutes later, James crossed the ball to Miguel Borja, where he scored a beautiful bicycle kick to destroy the American’s hope of coming back.
This was only an international friendly, so the end result means little. It does however allow these young players to get some more experience. Columbia is one of the better teams in South America, and the U.S did have some really good moments of play, especially in the early second half when they were up 2-1. The Columbian player’s were just far more talented and experienced then the young American squad. The U.S coach, Dave Sarachan, says “there’s been much improvement since the Trinidad & Tobago”. This is Sarachan’s eighth game as the coach of the men’s national team. His record is 3-3-2, so there is some improvement happening to the team. Sarachan believes that they have a lot of new, fresh, young players in the program, and he believes have a long future ahead of them as a part of the U.S men’s national team. The U.S will play Peru next, on Tuesday at 7:30.
