Just when we thought things could not get any worse, Jets vs. Bills happened. The matchup was supposed to be two young QBs, selected within four picks of each other, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen. Instead, we got the premier matchup of 39-year-old Josh McCown and after-thought Matt Barkley. What was even more sad was the outcome, which has every Jets fan calling for Todd Bowles’ dismissal.
It was an utter embarrassment from the start, as the Barkley-led Bills drove with ease every time they got the ball, culminating to a 31-0 lead at one point. Wow. The Buffalo Bills, the team that was supposed to be the biggest laughing stock in the NFL (right up there with the NY Giants), came into MetLife and made every single fan that attended the game, miserable. Boos and jeers were heard from the very beginning, and by the time the game got out of hand, several things were clear. Most importantly, Todd Bowles should not make it out of Monday night as the coach. There really is no statistic or logic behind him keeping his duties, a 23-35 record, and it can be argued that during his four year stint with the Jets, his most memorable win came after New England gave up a game late in the 2015-16 season with half of their starters not playing.
Although the players are currently going on record to say that they will support Bowles throughout this process, there is no hiding to what is really going on inside the locker room. The past few weeks especially, players like Jamal Adams and Robby Anderson have said they are tired of losing or that the culture needs to change. Easiest way to do that, fire Bowles. There can be no progress with him and the helm, it’s been clear for several years now that he is not suited to build a young team up and make them contenders. It is simply time part ways and look for a new and more creative head coach, which there is a good amount of around the league.
Somebody like Vikings OC John DeFilippo seems to fit that mold quite well. He’s been known to get the most out of his quarterbacks, being the Eagles QB coach during Carson Wentz’ rookie year, and has now made Kirk Cousins up in Minnesota look like a top-end signal-caller. Sam Darnold desperately needs a genius mind to mold him into a top quarterback that he is capable of becoming, and DeFilippo would be a stunning addition. What more can a fan ask for than a Jared Goff and Sean McVay 2.0?
