The U.S men’s national team was defeated on Thursday by England. The youthful England squad showed their dominance over the United States by controlling the whole entire game, having 61% possession of the ball. The starting XI for England was a bright, interesting new squad for them, having debuts for players like Callum Wilson, Lewis Dunk, and Jadon Sancho. Sancho has been a star in the Bundesliga, helping his team Borussia Dortmund hold the top of the table by 4 points. He has four goals and six assists in eleven games. He was influential into England’s win against the U.S, having an assist on one of the three goals.
England first found the back of the net in the 25 minute. Dele Alli was dribbling down the left side of the field, wherein he drew two defenders in. He passed the ball to Jesse Lingard, and Lingard curled the ball into the far top hand corner, the goal was outstanding. England was peppering the U.S and was able to find a second goal two minutes later through Trent Alexander-Arnold. He made an overlapping run around Sancho when he had the ball at the top of the box, received the ball, and finished it first time. It was his first goal for the Three Lions. The game was quiet until the 77 minute, when England found their third and final goal. Fabian Delph crossed the ball into the box, where it was found by Wilson and he finished the crossed out of the air.
USMNT is a inexperienced new team that has a lot of potential to be a good team, they just need to fix a couple of things. Firstly, they need a leader. After watching the game, it looked like the United States had no one to hype the team up when they were down. Christian Pulisic made the most amount of chances during the game, but he needs help. Secondly, I believe that they need a new goalkeeper. Brad Guzan played well against England, making a couple of good saves. The U.S do have a young goalkeeper named Zac Steffen, who does have a lot of potential, but just haven’t gotten an opportunity.
This was a big game for England, not just because they had a few new starters, but because one of their long time starters was leaving the team. Wayne Rooney played his last game for the Three Lions, having 53 goals in 120 appearances.
