Barcelona were able to secure the top spot in Group B with a win over PSV Eindhoven with the score being 2-1. Barcelona have already secured a spot in the Round of 16, but this win gives them good positioning in the next round. The game was an all out shoot out from both sides, Barcelona having 21 shots with eight on target, and PSV having 23 shots and nine of them being on target. Barcelona did play their normal style of play, controlling the ball in the midfield.
PSV came out very strong in the beginning of the game, having two opportunities to score within the first five minutes, one from a free kick and another from a corner, but Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen smothered both attempts. PSV were definitely the more dominant side for the first 20 minutes of the game, peppering Barcelona’s defense with wave after wave of attack, but they couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. Barcelona looked shaky in the first half defensively, but ter Stegen was able to save all of the shots PSV attempted.
The second half of the game began and Barcelona were able to find their first goal through the superstar captain, Lionel Messi. Ousmane Dembele laid the ball of to Messi in PSV’s box, wherein he was able to dribble past defenders and blast the ball into the top right hand corner, it was magnificent. Barcelona were able to find a rhythm after scoring the first, netting their second goal only ten minutes after the first. They were awarded a free kick right outside of PSV’s box. Messi swung the ball into the box, and Gerard Pique was able to get a touch to the ball to guide it into the back of the net. PSV weren’t out of the game yet, being able to score a goal in the 81 minute through their captain, Luuk de Jong. A ball was whipped into the box, where in de Jong was able to head it past ter Stegen to score.
PSV played and finished the game strong, even though they are already going to be eliminated from the Champions League, Luuk de Jong and Chucky Lozano both had great opportunities to score, but weren’t able to finish their chances. Barcelona have looked strong so far this season, winning of tying their games in Champions League, and only one point under league leaders for La Liga, Sevilla. Barcelona will play Tottenham next. The Spurs are looking to win this game in order to stay in second in Group B, after defeating Inter Milan today.
