The Washington Capitals (17-9-3) host the Detroit Redwings (13-13-4) at Capital One Arena on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. (ET) puck drop. This is the second of three meetings between the two teams. In their first matchup on Nov. 23, the Capitals beat the Red Wings 3-1 with tallies from Tom Wilson, Michal Kempny and Alexander Ovechkin. The Tuesday night game will be broadcasted on NBCSN and NBCSN Washington.
Tuesday night’s home game follows a three-game road trip, where the Capitals collected two wins. Their last game came against the Columbus Blue Jackets (16-10-2), where the Capitals shut them out 4-0.
The Red Wings are coming off a Saturday 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders (14-11-3). They also have a Monday night game against the Los Angeles Kings (11-18-1).
What to watch for in the Washington Capitals:
Washington Capitals right-winger TJ Oshie is in the lineup for the Tuesday night matchup. This will be Oshie’s first game since the Nov. 14 matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, where he sustained a concussion from being slammed to the ice by Josh Morrissey. Before getting injured, Oshie had nine goals and five assists in the 18 games he played in.
Capitals lines today
Burakovsky is out there, but not part of line rushes
— Tom Gulitti (@TomGulittiNHL) December 10, 2018
In Monday morning’s practice, NHL regional writer Tom Gulitti tweeted that Oshie had taken Andre Burakovsky’s spot on the first line in practice. Burakovsky will potentially be a healthy scratch for Tuesday night’s game.
Travis Boyd will stay on the fourth line after recording a goal and an assist in Saturday’s game against the Blue Jackets. Boyd now has one goal and seven assists in the 13 games he has played with the Capitals this season.
Alexander Ovechkin recorded his 22 goal this season putting him in first for goals in the league. Ovechkin has recorded a point or more in his past 11 games. He looks to extend this streak in Tuesdays game. He also is going to be a big factor in the physical game due to Tom Wilson still being out with a concussion he sustained during the game against the Vegas Golden Knights last week.
Expected in net Tuesday is Braden Holtby, who recorded his second shutout of the season.
What to watch for in the Detroit Red Wings:
The past three games, Dylan Larkin has averaged two points. In Saturday night’s game against the Islanders, Larkin recorded two assists. Larkin is also the leader in points for the Red Wings with 28 (11 goals and 17 assists). In Thursday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs (20-8-1), Larkin got the overtime winning goals to propel the Red Wings to a 5-4 win.
Jimmy Howard is expected in net after playing the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.
Prediction: Capitals 3-Red Wings 2
