The Milwaukee Brewers came up just short last season, finishing one game away from going to the World Series. This is a great look for the Brewers when free agency comes around. Many players will take into consideration how far the Brewers made it last year and it could influence their decision to come play in Milwaukee.
A key position the Brewers need to fill is in their starting pitching rotation. In the post season last year they struggled to have a starting pitcher go any longer than four innings. That makes it hard to keep relief pitchers from overthrowing. There are many solid pitchers on the market that the Brewers should look into getting.
A great fit for their pitching rotation would be starting pitcher, Sonny Gray. The Brewers had previous interest in acquiring Gray from the Oakland Athletics back in 2017, but they asked for too much which turned the Brewers away. Now he is playing for the Yankees and they have showed little interest in the all-star pitcher. The Yankees are focused on getting Manny Machado from the Los Angeles Dodgers and if they can get him then the price for Gray will start to get more negotiable.
Another smart addition to the team would be to go for infielder, Troy Tulowitzki. Second base was a hard spot to fill for the Brewers last year. Jonathan Villar had a very inconsistent year on offense and Tulowitzki could be a great addition in his place. A defensive pairing of Orlando Arcia and Tulowitzki in the middle infield would be extremely impactful.
The biggest downside for Tulowitzki is his history of injuries. Last season he had to have surgery on both of his heels and missed the entire season. He hasn’t been playing like himself the last couple of years in the MLB. All of his stat lines have dropped over the years and this isn’t a good look for a potential MVP candidate. Although, if he can stay healthy throughout the season he would make a very good addition to the Brewers infield.
After a very successful season in 2018 the Brewers will definitely be making some big moves to make it back to the playoffs. They desperately need to sign a solid pitcher to help out their starting rotation and make another deep run in the post season. If they can find another starting pitcher and land a top prospect for their infield they could easily make another run at a 96 win season.
