2018 was previously thought to be a memorable year for the Green Bay Packers. The franchise was celebrating their 100th year of existence. Aaron Rodgers returned from a broken collarbone. New general manager Brian Gutekunst made a big splash in free agency with signing of tight end Jimmy Graham. The season did end up being a history making one for the Packers. It just wasn’t the type of history they hoped to make.
The year started off with a bang, as the Packers rallied from a 20 point deficit to beat the Chicago Bears. In that game, Rodgers sprained his knee, which gave him trouble the rest of the year. The following week, the Packers failed to hold on to a fourth quarter lead against the Minnesota Vikings, which became a theme for the year. The Packers were fortunate the Vikings couldn’t make a field goal, as the game ended in a tie.
Following that Vikings game, the Packers could not put a complete four quarters of football. A number of factors seemed to derail anything positive for the Packers. Whether it was costly penalties, missed field goals, or untimely turnovers, the Packers could not get out of their own way. The Packers’ poor play added fuel to the rumors of head coach Mike McCarthy’s firing. Following a lackluster 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, those rumors became reality. McCarthy became the first coach in team history to be fired mid-season.
Joe Philbin became the interim head coach, leading the Packers to a 2-2 record during the final month of the season. Sunday, the Packers suffered their ninth loss of the season, a 34-0 blowout at the hands of the Detroit Lions. Rodgers left the game after suffering a concussion. The Packers continued to put the “special” in special teams, as the Lions successfully converted a fake field goal for a touchdown. Packers receivers had issues catching the ball, and the defense could not tackle Lions running back Zach Zenner.
Sunday was a culmination of everything that had went wrong for the Packers in 2018. It certainly was a memorable 100th season in Titletown. It just wasn’t for any of the right reasons.
