The Green Bay Packers announced on Tuesday that they had come to a conclusion on who they wanted as head coach. In their final decision they decided to hire former OC of the Tennessee Titans, Matt Lafleur. He will now take the place of former coach, Mike McCarthy, who was fired on December 2nd after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Matt Lafleur has been creating strong offenses around the NFL for years now. He spent two years as the Atlanta Falcons quarterback coach and would help Matt Ryan bring the Falcons to a Super Bowl. In 2017 he was the quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Rams and worked with Jared Goff to create an offense that ranked number one in scoring.
Lafleur is obviously an offensive minded coach and this should really help his new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. He is really big on getting the ball out quickly through screen passes to the running back and quick slants over the middle. This is a good look for the Packers as they have two really solid running backs in Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.
Special teams has been a problem for the Packers all season and ranked 28th at the end of 2018. Matt Lafleur recognized this and wasted no time in firing special teams coordinator, Ron Zook. Within Lafleur’s’ first week of being head coach he is already on top of things and bringing in the right people to benefit the team.
Matt Lafleur’s most important task will to gain trust from Aaron Rodgers which should be easy since he played the quarterback position in college and has been a quarterbacks coach for most of his time spent in the NFL. At the end of Mike McCarthy’s career he really struggled to have a good relationship with Rodgers and he never really trusted McCarthy’s play calling in the last couple of seasons. Lafleur has plenty of experience coaching elite quarterbacks such as Matt Ryan and Jared Goff so him and Rodgers should be able to get on the same page very quickly.
There are talks that Lafleur is looking to bring in a new offensive coordinator. A top candidate for him to hire is John DeFilippo. DeFilippo has coached under many of the NFL’s greatest coaches such as Andy Reid and Doug Pederson. Just like Lafleur, DeFilippo was a quarterback in college and would eventually become a quarterbacks coach in the NFL. He worked with quarterback Nick Foles who won Super Bowl MVP and also with Carson Wentz who was and MVP candidate.
