With the appointment of new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær and the current seven match win streak, the famed dominance of Manchester United has returned to the premier league for the first time since 2013, and the elites of the top league in England better be ready to fight against them. Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement sent the club into a frenzy desperately trying to find the next legendary manager, and it’s this new manager that’s going to bring the squad back to glory.
Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement from the manager position at united, the club hired David Moyes, former manager at Everton. This move was a clear failure, as the Reds would find themselves seventh in the table at the end of the year, having failed for any European competition. The appointment of Louis Van Gaal later that year provided some hope, the team would go on to finish fourth in the league the following year and qualify for European competition. However, they would quickly crash out of the champions league, and a year later finished fifth. This drop in success however was boosted by the signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba who, under the managerial-ship of Jose Mourinho, would help lead the club to their first ever Europa League title, one of the few remaining championships the team hadn’t yet won. However, due to poor performances and poor relationships with key players, Manchester United let go of Jose Mourinho on December 18, 2018.
Since then the club hasn’t looked back. After winning seven games in a row, United still find themselves in sixth. However, they are tied in points with fifth placed Arsenal. United also only play three more games against teams in the top four of the table. With this relatively easy finish to the premier league season, United has plenty of time to claw their way back into champions league qualification. The positivity amongst the players has also increased under their new manager. Besides an improvement in form, relationships between the club and players such as Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial have steadily improved. Both of which experienced difficulties earning consistent starting eleven spots under Mourinho and have been rumored to desire leaving the club for over a year. With the transfer window currently open and no news of either the players or the clubs wanting to sell their talents, it seems as though hiring Solskjær was not only key to improving the form of the club, but also retaining its quality. Pogba got the superb assist in the winning goal against fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur, and Martial is currently tied with Romelu Lukaku for the most goals for the Club this season with eight, placing them tied ninth in the Premier League. If Manchester United want to continue their winning ways they need to continue to hold onto Martial and Pogba, especially since Martial’s contract runs out this summer. Perhaps a solid finish and hiring Solskjær as permanent manager at the end of the season will be the keys to securing Martial’s signature before July.
With still little film on the play style of the new manager so far, the players currently experiencing their best form in almost a calendar year, expectations from the fans continuing to soar and the top teams, including Manchester city, experiencing tough months, a top four finish for Manchester United remains not only possible, but highly likely. Solskjær, a former star player under Sir Alex Ferguson, appears to be the perfect man to bring back the magic that the club seemed to have underneath his former boss.
