During Thursday’s Europa League round of 16 match against Dynamo Kyiv, Chelsea FC looked amazing. The fans at Stamford Bridge were pleased as they saw their team comfortably win against the Ukrainian side 3-0. Goals from Pedro, Willian, and Callum Hudson-Odoi led the blues to a first leg victory and one step closer to the quarterfinals.
Pedro looked like prime Barcelona Pedro throughout the whole match. The little Spaniard’s energy and pressure were felt for all 90 minutes. In the first half alone, Pedro could have had a hat trick of left footed goals if it weren’t for a couple clutch saves from Kyiv keeper Denys Boyko.
The first half would end 1-0 with Dynamo Kyiv lucky to only be down by one. The next half saw N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek come on in the 62 minute. Fans have been begging for Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi to make more appearances for the London club.
In the 65 minute, Chelsea were awarded a free kick just outside of the box. The blues have options when it comes to free kicks. Depending on who’s on the field at the time, Chelsea have free kick experts in David Luiz, Willian, Marcos Alonso, and Eden Hazard. All have different techniques and will have keepers guessing who is actually going to take it.
Willian stepped up and decided that he would take the free kick, and he did not disappoint. Almost in the identical spot that he scored against Kyiv just a couple years ago, Willian placed a perfect free kick up and over the wall in to the top left corner, freezing Boyko on its way in to make it 2-0.
Right before full time, Hudson-Odoi would get his name on the score-sheet thanks to a beautiful pass from Pedro at half field to start the move. The young Englishman should now be getting comfortable playing at least 15-20 minutes a game becoming a regular starter for manager Maurizio Sarri.
Chelsea look to be the favorites to win the Europa League this season. With Arsenal losing 3-1 to French side Rennes, it looks like Chelsea will be the only Premier League side advancing to the quarterfinals. The only other teams to be cautious of moving forward would be Italian side Napoli, who won 3-0 against Red Bull Salzburg, and Inter Milan.
The second leg of the round of 16 tie between Chelsea and Kyiv will be on March 14 in Ukraine.
