Two weeks ago, at the NFL Combine, New York Giants GM addressed the media regarding the OBJ extension stating “We did not sign Odell just to trade him.” In a trade that shocked the NFL landscape, Odell Beckham Jr was traded to the Cleveland Browns. In return, the New York Giants received Jabrill Peppers, a first round pick, and a third round pick. At face value, it seems like the Browns won an irresistible trade. They now have the sixth-highest odds to win the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Giants are now in full rebuild mode, with Saquon Barkley as the franchise cornerstone.
It’s very hard to understand why the Giants felt OBJ would not be part of their future plans. They just signed him to a five-year, $90 million dollar deal last season. The New York Giants will have to take a dead cap hit of $16 million dollars for the 2019 season. With the two picks they obtained, the 17th and 95th respectively, it will be interesting to see what direction the New York Giants will take. Will they take a QB with the 17th pick to bridge the gap between Eli Manning and the future? Will they dedicate one of those picks to a guard or tackle to help a Giants offensive line that were bottom-ten in sacks given up last season? It will be incredibly interesting to see where the Giants go with their rebuild and whether the OBJ trade will have major ramifications on the Giants for years to come.
For the Browns, the general consensus is that they won the trade. They executed the biggest trade in their franchise history. The Cleveland Browns added arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL. In addition to Jarvis Landry, the Browns have one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. They also got him at a discount because Gettleman paid OBJ the first year. The Browns have never had a player like OBJ before. Honestly, most teams have never had a player like OBJ before. Now, it seems like the Browns fleeced the Giants. Now, the main issue with the deal is that the Browns have spent a lot of money on players and have traded away many of picks. The Browns need to be cautious to make sure they don’t put their future in jeopardy.
Overall, the Browns accepted a trade that has put them in the Super Bowl conversation. They have depth in many positions and are ready to win now. For the Giants, the rebuild has officially begun. One will always wonder what could have been if OBJ stayed in New York. For now, it looks like OBJ will be taking over the city of Cleveland.
