Liverpool was able to defeat Bayern Munich 3-1 in the Round of 16 for the Champions League. The first leg ended in a tie at Anfield, so Liverpool had to travel to Munich to play at the Allianz. This was one of the biggest games for Liverpool this season seeing how good Bayern Munich has done in the past in the Champions League. Although Bayern had most of the possession of the ball, they weren’t able to get past the well drilled English defense. Liverpool’s star centreback, Virgil Van Dijk, was yet again outstanding for the Reds.
Liverpool was able to find the back of the net first through Sadio Mane in the 26 minute. Dijk played an absolute perfect through ball to Mane at the top of the box. Mane took the ball down, turn away from Neuer and Sule and was able to float a shot to the back of the net. The goal was outstanding. Bayern was able to tie the game in the 59 minute. Serge Gnabry was able to beat Andy Robertson and whip in a dangerous cross that ended up deflecting into the goal off of Joel Matip. The second half began and Liverpool was able to take the lead again through Dijk. Milner sent in a corner into a dangerous area. Dijk rose above Javi Martinez and headed the ball into the back of the net. Liverpool’s third goal was sublime. Mo Salah hit a cross with the outside of his left foot and Mane was able to find the back of the net again.
Liverpool looked outstanding everywhere on the field. Dijk has come up big for Liverpool many times this season, but against Bayern, he was all over the place. Bayern’s superstar striker Robert Lewandoski only had one shot for the entire game and had the least amount of touches of any outfield player that played the full 90 minutes. Bayern has slowly been able to get back to the top of the table in the Bundesliga but after their performance against Liverpool, they have many things to work on if they want to do well next year for Champions League. Jurgen Klopp has truly changed Liverpool and with the way they are playing now this season, Klopp and Liverpool have a good possibility of going back to the final and maybe even win it. They still have some things they need to work on like being more creative in the midfield. They have lost their 18 point lead in the Premier League, but they are still challenging defending champions Manchester City for the trophy.
