The conference championships are now over and the bracket has been decided on. One of the biggest tournaments in college sports will be starting up on Thursday and there is a lot of tough decisions to be made this year. You can expect to have a lot of upsets, highlights, and wild finishes for this years tournament.
Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, and Gonzaga have earned the top seeds in this years tournament with Duke getting the top seed overall. Dukes star players, Zion Williamson and R.J Barrett, can help bring them back to a National Championship for the first time since 2015.
Duke is the number one seed in this region and they are easily the biggest favorite to come out of this side of the bracket. This is one of the easier regions as Michigan State is one of the only teams that could keep up with the number one team overall in the tournament. Michigan State made a great case to be one of the number one seeds in the tournament after winning the Big Ten Championship. A big upset to look at in this side of the bracket is Liberty over Mississippi State. Liberty is one of the slowest playing offensive teams in the country and are a very balanced team overall. They make teams play to their level and are extremely effective in a half court offense.
This might be one of the hardest regions with Gonzaga getting the number one seed. Gonzaga could really struggle with having to play either Syracuse or Baylor in the round of 32. Marquette and Florida State are teams that could make a deep run in the tournament. Marquette got the tricky 5 seed which is never a easy game to play in when at least one 12 seed from every year beats a 5 seed. Murray State has Sophomore guard, Ja Morant, who is a projected top three pick in the NBA draft. This is a very tough region and it could be any team who comes out on top.
North Carolina is the number one seed in this region but could run into Kentucky in the Elite 8. North Carolina. Iowa State is a really good underdog to come out of this region. They won the Big 12 conference tournament and run a highly efficient offense with four players who average more than 11 points per game. They struggle defensively but will should be able to beat a 14 loss Ohio State who was very questionable on getting into the tournament.
Virginia is the number one seed once again after their disastrous loss in the first round to 16 seed UMBC. They have a relatively easy path to the final four with Villanova, Purdue, and Tennessee on their side of the bracket. Saint Mary’s could very well upset Villanova as they have beat Gonzaga this season who is a number one seed in the West. Saint Mary’s Junior, Tanner Krebs, is a solid starting shooting guard for the Gaels who shoots nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc. Virginia is a very good team this year and should make a good run to the final four.
