The New York Mets currently boast a 6-3 record, and sit in second place in the National League East. It seems as if almost every year the Mets start the season with an opening day victory, followed by a glorious two-week period of virtually perfect baseball. A prime example, the 2018 Mets, started the season winning eleven of twelve games, only to then drop sixteen of the next twenty three games.
Mets fans tend to be overoptimistic at the beginning of every season, although it is easy to do so when the team starts off so hot every year. Will the 2019 Mets continue to disappoint fans and shatter their dreams of contending after years of mediocrity?
The 2019 Mets are far from anything fans have seen in recent years. After revamping the roster and making some huge offseason acquisitions during the winter, there are new promising feelings amongst both Mets players and fans.
Through nine games, the Mets have shown that their pitching staff is top notch and can handle just about any offense in the league. Their biggest concern as of now is offensive run production. In 2018, the Mets scored 402 runs on the road, compared to a mere 274 runs at their home ballpark, Citi Field.
Why are the Mets historically unable to score runs at home? Have no fear Mets fans, the 2019 team has already averaged 1.6 runs per game more than last season. The offense has showed that they can consistently produce runs, and even more impressively, string together promising rallies. Unlike last years team, the revamped Mets offense has the ability grind out victories in any way possible.
Barring any significant injuries on either side of the ball, the Mets are poised for sucess this season. The message is clear: win now. The Mets have all the necessary pieces to the puzzle in order to have a successful season. Don’t be surprised if the team makes a blockbuster deal near the trade deadline, where they dish out a few top prospects in order to acquire another elite player that would solidify an already impressive roster.
The 2019 Mets are quickly making an impact around the league and have not hesitated in making a name for themselves in the first week and a half of the young season.
